Maybe We Could Make It to Christmas

Like ya moms sneaking down stairs to drop some candies in old socks and steal a cigarette, here I’m leaving a very incomplete selection of rap songs in the dark of night on Christmas.

If you are like me, then you might need a break from E-40’s triple album or the 101-song long mixtape Lil B just dropped today. In that case, New York rapper Troy Ave dropped his second consecutive White Christmas mixtape, singer BJ the Chicago Kid put out his A Soulful Christmas EP, and Hypnotize Minds affiliate (RIP Lord Infamous) did another Wyte Christmas mixtape with Dirty Glove Bastard. As far as songs go, DMX was kind enough to do a version of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” when he visited Power 106 earlier this month.

Of course there’s classic albums like the 80s compilation Christmas Rap, the early No Limit compilation High Fo Xmas, Christmas on Death Row, and of course A Dipset X-Mas. The fine people at Up North Trips compiled a nice little playlist of all the classic songs from over the years yesterday. There’s also “Cold Chillin’ Christmas” by the Juice Crew, “Christmas Is” by Run-DMC, “XXX-Mas Freestyle” by Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie, “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa” by De La Soul, “Sleigh Ride” by TLC, and good ol’ “Santa Baby (Remix).” That’s in addition to a couple more Dipset songs “Bad Santa Intro” by Jim Jones and “Jingle Bellz” by Juelz Santana, plus Dirty Boyz’s “All I Want for Christmas Is to Get It Crunk.”

More recently, you can find carols in the intro to Migos’ “Hannah Montana.” Killer Mike and El-P just made a video for their song “A Christmas Fucking Miracle” and cultural appropriators extraordinaire Itsthereal did another little Lonely Island-parody parody with “Jews for Jesus Piece.” 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne did their thing with “Twerk Season.” And a few Chicago rappers made a ditty called “SaveMoney Christmas.”

My mom will be playing Celtic Christmas tunes all day, in which case I’ll turn to Instagram. You too can find Puff Daddy’s Christmas tree, Katie Got Bandz buying her friend a television, Snoop Dogg sipping brandy and nog, Gunplay flipping everyone off, Big Boi playing spades with his family or Chief Keef.

Also, if you’re like Big Sean and celebrating “ChristmaHanuKwanaakuh,” you might need a primer on Kwanzaa and this from the late great Frankie “Hollywood” Crocker should do the job. Without further ado, I leave with the greatest Christmas rap song ever, OutKast’s original “Player’s Ball” with the Christmas lyrics that’s getting harder to find every year. Happy Holidays from Rhyme Junkie and my Google Reader! Here’s to hoping Friday After Next replaces A Christmas Story as the 24-Hour December 25 marathon.
