When I woke up this morning and saw this headline, I was very confused. And happy.
First of all, Larry King has a show? On Hulu? What?
Secondly, while I know Tyler, the Creator has been interviewed on a myriad of outlets in the past, but I’ve never seen him so out in the open. Especially after a Soundset performance that, frankly, didn’t blow me away. In my Soundset review, I mentioned how he and Earl Sweatshirt seemed out of touch with some of the crowd, and even taunted a couple members. To be fair, their biggest fans would probably welcome it in the same way a Don Rickles fan would welcome an insult at a comedy club.
In the interview, he comes off in a completely different way. For starters, he says that he doesn’t want to rap anymore. He wants to make film, and be mentioned with the likes of Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. He also said he’s listening to Isaac Hayes and Barry White music, to figure out how to sing with his deep-toned voice. There’s a lot of good stuff in here. In fact, it may be more catered to the folks that weren’t Tyler/Odd Future collective than the group’s biggest fans.
He doesn’t avoid the cursing (which, to be honest, feels awkward to watch in a Larry King interview), but comes off in a way most people have probably never seen him before. You had to assume that he’s an intelligent guy; just look at all the stuff he’s been working on over the past few years. A creative mind like that has to have their head on straight. Tyler clearly does.
This interview is hilarious in all the ways you’d expect in an interview between a veteran of television journalism and a guy who has a show on Adult Swim. Still, it wasn’t what I expected, in a good way.
