It really doesn’t feel like it has been 5 years, but it has.
Michael Jackson passed away on June 25th, 2009. At this point in time, I was a graduated high school senior, getting ready for my first year of college. I was a big Michael Jackson fan, and the proud owner of Thriller, Bad, and his #1’s album.
He is, was, and always will be the king of pop music.
No, he wasn’t a hip hop artist. Even so, trying to find 5 artists with more influence on the hip hop sound would be a near-impossible task.
Obviously, with influence comes a common amount of praise from other hip hop artists. At Soundset music festival, Nas made his love of Jackson’s music clear during his rendition of ‘It Ain’t Hard to Tell‘. The connection? One of the best songs in Michael Jackson’s seemingly-endless catalog of classics.
Nas wasn’t the only one. There were many more, and that probably won’t stop. Not long ago, we talked about Tupac’s impact on the hip hop scene. It’s an impact that few can touch, but in a way (at least on the production side of things), isn’t Jackson’s just as strong?
That’s a debate that most won’t take on, but it might be one to consider.
