All hail Guava Island! Breathtaking tropical location, bewitching cinematography, beautiful actors, and breezy feels for all.
Donald Glover made magic this weekend in Guava Island. In fact, Donald Glover’s been making magic for the last few years. The Emmy, Golden Globe, Grammy, and Writers Guild Award Winning mastermind behind Atlanta and musical artist known by all under the moniker Childish Gambino debuted his secret weapon that he unsuspectingly unleashed for Coachella audiences this week.
With the help of Rihanna and director Hiro Murai, Guava Island was unveiled on Thursday evening for music festival fans ahead of his headline performance. If you weren’t made privy of the roll-out that was introduced to the world earlier this week, you’re not too late to catch the film that’s on the lips of, well, everybody. The project was made available to stream on Amazon starting Saturday, making its way to Amazon Prime subscribers.
With a reported net worth of $12 million, Glover has paved a lane as the consummate entertainer and creatively talented mastermind. Even head honcho Jennifer Salke of Amazon Studios knew she was witnessing chemistry in the making as she revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that after a four and a half minute video teaser, all funds for the project had her full commitment, stating,
"“I would have committed to Donald sight unseen. I knew whatever he wanted to amplify would have relevance and entertainment. He has the ability to create cultural moments and spread a message that’s interesting.”"
Written by Donald brother, Stephen Glover, secretly filmed in Havana, Cuba with a star-studded cast, and running just shy of 60 minutes in length, the concept behind the film was broken down into its lowest common denominator until all that was left was the aesthetically pleasing summertime feel with Donald Glover’s character Deni Maroon and girlfriend played by Rihanna, dancing off into the sunset.
