“Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now." That's Drake’s opening line from his song “Family Matters,” and it's aged like fine wine. That's because Kendrick Lamar walked away with five Grammy awards, including one for Record of the Year for his Drake diss, “Not Like Us.”

Now, any artist winning five major awards in one night would be seen as a good thing for them, right? In this case, however, some of what it's done is strengthen people’s claim that Lamar gets his wins because he’s a “media darling.”

50 Cent said on several occasions that “Kendrick is always going to be a media darling.” The Queens rapper believes that Lamar knows how to play his cards right to get hyped up by the industry. And it could be said the recent Grammy awards showed that 50's assessment wasn’t far off.

Lamar won Record of the Year over “Now and Then” by The Beatles, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” by Beyonce, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, and “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish, among others. While fans continue to justify Lamar’s wins, those who aren’t his fans are having a hard time digesting it.

A fan wrote that Lamar is getting “fake love” from the industry, because people have rallied together to harm Drake’s career. Some have said the claims about everyone coming together in an attempt to humiliate Drake were further proven since ‘Max,’ the streaming service, also took shots at Drake with a clip from Degrassi.

As for “Not Like Us” sweeping the night, it’s a common belief among Drake fans that if the song wasn’t aimed at Drizzy, it wouldn’t have become a mega-hit.

Although these are mere claims and there’s no way to prove if there was any teamwork involved in getting Lamar five Grammy awards, the sheer nature of his wins has surely perked up some ears. A talented artist like Lamar, who is widely regarded as one of the best of his generation, shouldn’t be best known for his petty war with another rapper.

He has so much more to offer musically and hopefully, he will get back to being the same Kendrick Lamar who was once revered for his emotional depth, clarity, plus, his ability to write quality, timeless music.
