'Lollipop' lyrics: Lil Wayne's biggest song, explained

"Lollipop" might not be your favorite Lil Wayne song. It might not even be your favorite Tha Carter III song. That being said, "Lollipop" was a watershed moment for the rapper, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and solidifying him as one of the biggest artists of the 2000s.

Part of the appeal of "Lollipop" lies in its earworm hook, which was provided by the late, great Static Major, but most of the people claiming they know Wayne's verses are kidding themselves. It's kind of like the Shaggy song "It Wasn't Me" -- we know the chorus, but we're kind of just fumbling around with the rapping until Static comes back.

Lil Wayne forgot the lyrics to 'Lollipop' Remix

The wrapper/rapper double entendre is definitely more clear when you read the lyrics as opposed to hearing them, and the "Shawty Say" refrain that Lil Wayne used proved to be so catchy that he recycled it for the chorus of the 2009 David Banner hit "Shawty Say" (shocking title, we know).

"Lollipop" was such a massive deal that Wayne included a remix of the song on Tha Carter III. The remix featured a verse from Kanye West and new bars from Wayne that were so good that he was impressed by them during a 2021 interview with Fox Sports anchor Darnell Smith.

The clip, which can be watched below, sees Smith quote the lines:

""Safe sex is great sex / better wear a latex / 'Cause you don't want that late text / That 'I think I'm late' text.""

The anchor cited it as one of his favorite couplets of all time, and Wayne was so taken aback by the wordplay that he forget he wrote it! "Oh, f**k," he said. "I said that? I'm a dog. I don't know when I said it, or why I said it or where I said it. I said it, though."

Moral of the story: don't feel bad if you don't know all the lyrics to your favorite Lil Wayne song. The chances are, he probably doesn't know all the lyrics at this point, either (to his credit, he has, um, a lot of music).
