A lot of the reviews on Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl performance are in. The verdict? Well, as with any kind of artistic output, the reviews are mixed, as some liked the show and some didn't.
One person who made his thoughts known is Charlamagne tha God, who spoke about the performance on The Breakfast Club. It's his opinion that Kendrick should've avoided playing "Not Like Us" at the halftime show, and he gave a couple of reasons.
For one, the radio host believes that Kendrick means way more to the culture than a diss song, and he's only making it harder for people to see him as an artist who has other big songs. "I still wouldn’t have done 'Not Like Us' if I was Kendrick," said Charlamagne. "Kendrick is bigger than ‘Not Like Us.’ ‘Not Like Us‘ is a moment in time for Kendrick; it does not define him or who he is."
Charlamagne then said that Kendrick shouldn't have given Drake and his OVO associates all of that attention since the Super Bowl halftime show is one of the biggest stages in the world.
"At the end of the set, it said ‘game over,’ and I really hope it is at this point," said The Breakfast Club co-host. "You should never go past the mark you aim for in victory ... I just wouldn’t give my opp and his minions that kind of love on that big a-s stage."
In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl LIX, there was a lot of talk about whether Kendrick would perform "Not Like Us." It was hard to tell early on in the performance because he teased the cut before bringing up Drake suing UMG over the song. As many are aware of, Kendrick calls him a pedophile in the lyrics.
The Compton artist not only performed the song, he gave a menacing smile when saying the line, "Say, Drake, I hear you like 'em young," which quickly became a meme.
