DJ Akademiks warns Young Thug about releasing new music after Gunna
By Daryl Nelson
Here's the thing about hip-hop: It moves super fast, because today's rap star can become tomorrow's old news in a blink. At one time, Young Thug was considered one of rap's superstars but since being arrested in May 2022 on RICO charges and spending more than two years behind bars, his music career has taken a hit.
Thug was released from jail on October 31, of this year after pleading guilty to charges related to drugs, weapons, and gang activity. Soon after, he was seen with T.I. in what looked like a recording studio. Then earlier this week, Thug was in the studio with Future, Lil Baby and Travis Scott, so it appears he'll be releasing new music sooner than later. But before Thug drops a new album, DJ Akademiks gave him a warning.
"Thug, if your first album ain't hotter than Gunna's last album, bruh, we might tell 'em 'we're good,'" said Akademiks. "Thug been locked up. I don't know how he's been viewing what's going on in the real world. Listen, you in the studio, Baby is like a block of ice. So if you think you was gonna go in there to cook up some heat, you need to throw a Baby out first ... If you think you about to cook up some mid and think we finna cancel Gunna, who is cooking up pure crack cocaine, it's not gonna happen."
Gunna was arrested with Thug and their YSL crew but was released in 2022 after pleading guilty to RICO charges. He's been accused of snitching on Thug but denied it.
Then in 2023, Gunna released his album A Gift & a Curse, which many said they loved, and some of the snitching claims dried up. The same happened after he released his 2024 album One of Wun. However, the claims resurfaced after Thug was accused of dissing him in a now-deleted tweet. "Gunna stop acting like we friends on the internet, I don’t know u my guy," Thug is being accused of writing.
It's safe to say that whenever he drops new music, it'll be compared to Gunna's releases.
