In early 2024, a mother named Laticha Bracero and her 21-year-old daughter Alyssa Cordova were killed by a drunk driver in downtown St. Louis after attending a Drake concert. The victims, who were from Chicago, were struck while walking to their hotel room. The OVO rapper has never opened up about the tragedy, but he decided to do so at a recent tour stop in Melbourne, Australia.
Drake spoke from the stage at the time and explained why he often gives things away at his shows, like money. Earlier this week, he gifted one fan in Melbourne $25,000 and another $20,000, according to Times of India.
"I haven’t told this story yet on the tour, but there’s a reason I do this [and give things away]. There’s a reason I do this part of the show,” he said. “Maybe if I tell you the story, it’ll bring you a little closer to what I’m talking about. But I had done a show back in the States, and it was a lady that had brought her daughter to the show, and they had a great time at the show from what I was told."
“And as they were leaving the show, they were crossing the street outside the arena and they got hit by a drunk driver, and they both unfortunately passed away," Drake added. "And it f----d me up. It really f----- my mind up to think that we could go from having this much fun, and then just like that, life changes.”
Drake continued by telling the crowd to be mindful of their fellow concertgoers, because no one knows what the next person is going through.
"They could be going through a f-----d up time, you know? Maybe they’re not getting treated the best, maybe their friends are doing them dirty, or they’re not in the best relationship. Maybe they got family problems," he explained.
As ABC News reported, the driver who struck Bracero and Cordova, Monte Henderson, ran several red lights before hitting a Mitsubishi Outlander and careening into the two women. He was reportedly going 70 mph at the time.
The drunk driver has been charged with DWI, as well as two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed criminal action. He pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for July 7.
