Mustard had a phenomenal 2024, because once "Not Like Us" dropped in May, his stock took off, and he's been flying high ever since. The song broke several streaming records, debuted at number 1 on Billboard Hot 100, and earned five nominations at the Grammys.

In an interview for Grammy.com, Mustard was asked about Lamar yelling his name after the beat switch on “tv off.” He was asked if it was part of the beat package or if the idea came from Lamar.

Mustard said that he has a habit of sending five, six beats to Lamar every day. The rapper gets to decide which beat works best for him and picks it out from the folder. He revealed that the beat on “tv off” was actually two separate beats that Lamar combined by himself. Although Mustard heard a snippet of another song, he wasn’t aware of what Lamar had in store for him.

So, Lamar screaming his name before the final verse came as a surprise. When he asked the rapper what made him do that, he told him that when he heard the beat, he felt like Goku and decided to let himself go a little bit in the manga character’s style.

“When I heard the beat, I just felt like Goku or something," Mustard said Kendrick explained. "Yeah, when I hear certain s--t on your beats, it brings out something else in me, so I just did whatever I felt.” Mustard was pleasantly surprised by the shoutout. The unusual producer tag also became an internet sensation immediately after the song was released.

Mustard produced one more song on Lamar’s GNX album, “hey now.” The 34-year-old producer is very happy about the positive response his work has gotten over the last year and is truly enjoying the fruits of his labor.
