Throughout the rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, the former had fewer people siding with him. Drake was single-handedly responding to and taking shots at nearly a dozen artists from the industry. However, people believed that he had a few folks standing by him, even if they weren’t vocal at the time.

One of those people, believed to be on Drake’s side, was his mentor Lil Wayne. No one had any doubts that the rap legend would have his back. After all, Weezy was the first one to have faith in Drake and his rather unconventional approach to hip-hop music.

Wayne didn’t insert himself in the rap beef between two of the biggest artists in the world. He didn’t make any comment, he wasn’t taking shots at anyone on songs, and was relatively quiet during the whole saga. However, in July 2024, a video of him rapping the chorus of “Not Like Us” surfaced on the internet.

The New Orleans rapper was doing a show at the time and he was rapping the chorus on stage. Some fans were shocked by his action and interpreted that he had also left Drake’s side. However, others saw the bigger picture and noticed that Weezy was wearing his OVO chain on the stage and was possibly separating himself and Drake from the other side by claiming ‘They not like us.’

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Wayne revealed what the actual story was. He said, “I went onstage and I was singing this song, and they thought I was dissing…I ain’t want my dude [Drake] to be mad at me. I didn’t even know it was Kendrick!”

Wayne wasn’t even aware that it was a diss track, let alone one aimed at Drake. His side of the story is absolutely believable, considering how zoned out Wayne usually is from the chaotic world. “If it don’t happen on this [ESPN] channel or FS1, I wouldn’t know that happened,” he said during the interview.

To further explain just how unaware Wayne is of certain things, during his interview, he revealed that he had no idea Lil Durk was in jail. Although he had “FREE LIL DURK” t-shirts in his dressing room, he had no idea what they were about. It was also revealed that Wayne didn’t know if Kanye West and Jay-Z did an album together.

When the interviewer mentioned Watch the Throne, Wayne asked, “What’s that?” Upon being informed that it’s the name of Ye and Jay’s collab album, “They did an album?” he asked.
