When Big Sean played his 2015 song "Blessings" to Kanye West for the first time, he didn't get the response he was looking for. It's not that Kanye didn't like the song, he liked it too much and wanted to lay a verse down.
It was a decision that Sean wasn't crazy about because "Blessings" was the last song recorded on his Dark Sky Paradise album, which had to be turned in. Plus, Sean said that Kanye didn't like Drake being asked to be on the single and not him.
"I remember Ye thinking that I picked Drake over him for some reason when we made the song 'Blessings,' and I'm like, 'What are you talking about, bro?' Sean told Complex. "Ye heard it, and Ye had been a real instrumental part of my third album, Dark Sky Paradise ... He was featured on there, like, three times or something like that."
"'Blessings' was the last song that got added at the very last second, and he heard it and he was like, 'I got to be on the song,'" he continued. "And I was like, 'Aw, s**t bro, like, it's too f******g late. It's, like, I'm turning — my preorder comes out in like a day.'"
But in the end Sean gave in, because the GOOD Music founder signed him back in 2007.
"It was different than how it is now but at the same time, I helped him get the verse done," the Detroit rapper explained. "I wrote the verse with him, right? So it's like, 'All right. You put me on, bro. So I'm gonna listen to whatever the f**k you say. Like, if you want to be on it, let's figure it out and we'll figure out the logistics later.'"
In 2021, while on Drink Champs, Sean told a similar story about Kanye being heavily featured on Dark Sky Paradise and not being very fond of it. He sat down with the hosts shortly after Kanye went on Drink Champs and said signing Sean to GOOD Music was the worst decision he's ever made. You can hear Sean talk about "Blessings" in that interview below at the 1:59:42 mark.
