The Bay Area legend E-40 is back with a new album, Rule of Thumb: Rule 1, the first part of a two-disk project that showcases his longevity and versatility in the rap game.

The album features 23 tracks with guest appearances from Larry June, Clyde Carson, Philthy Rich, Gucci Mane, B-Legit, O.T. Genasis, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Too $hort, Mistah F.A.B., and more. E-40 delivers his signature flow and witty wordplay over diverse beats that range from hyphy to trap to soulful.

Rule of Thumb: Rule 1 is E-40’s first solo album since 2019’s Practice Makes Paper, which was his 26th studio album and debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Since then, he has released two collaborative albums: Ain’t Gone Do It/Terms & Conditions with Too $hort in 2020 and Snoop Cube 40 $hort with his supergroup Mount Westmore, consisting of himself, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Too $hort, in 2021. E-40 has also been busy with his entrepreneurial ventures, such as his wine and liquor brands, his cannabis company, and his book publishing imprint.

Rule of Thumb: Rule 1 is a testament to E-40’s consistency and relevance in the hip-hop industry, as he continues to drop quality music and collaborate with new and old generations of artists.

Some of the standout tracks on the album include “Off Dat Mob”, a hard-hitting anthem that pays homage to his mob music roots. “Lift It”, a motivational track that encourages listeners to lift their spirits and their money. “Get My Life Right”, a introspective song that features a melodic hook from YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and “Lemme Go”, a fun and catchy track that reunites him with his longtime friends and collaborators Too $hort and Mistah F.A.B.

E-40 has announced that the second part of Rule of Thumb, which will also have 23 tracks, is scheduled to drop in January 2023. Fans can expect more surprises and bangers from the veteran rapper, who shows no signs of slowing down or compromising his style. Rule of Thumb: Rule 1 is available now on all streaming platforms.
