Wale has officially partnered with Nike for the release of the company's DMV Cherry Blossom Foamposite sneakers. Plus, he shared a portion of his new song "Ghetto Speak," which plays in the background. The Washington D.C. rapper also stars in an ad for the kicks.
"From a land that far too well comprehends universal madness / Not too far from the symbolic architecture that masks it / But all is fair, I guess / ‘Cause broken glass, cherry blossoms, them bullet fragments don’t look as fantastic on the pamphlet," he rhymes in a spoken word style.
Some may find it surprising that Nike and Wale are just partnering now since he released his popular cut "Nike Boots" in 2008. In fact, Wale repeatedly said that he wants to work with the sportswear brand, like in 2018 when he held up one of their sneakers like a phone and called them out.
"When is Nike going to play fair, man?" he asked on Instagram Live. "Just call me. Hello? They ain’t on the phone. They giving everybody else deals and s**t.”
It's too early to tell, but the Nike partnership could mark Wale's official return to the spotlight. His last album was 2021's Folarin II, but he released a single titled "Max Julien" last year. Wale also inked a deal with Def Jam in 2023 and is no longer with Rick Ross' MMG label.
The move seems to be a good one since he's often butted heads with MMG's Meek Mill, most recently this year when the Philly rapper called him out for taking a photo with Dean Stay Reddy, said to be Meek's enemy.
"Wale never liked me," wrote Meek on social media at the time. "Now ima treat him like the streets every time I see him ... I gave him 1000 chances these guys be thinking they linking with the enemy clown ass n*gga. I wish I woulda knew the other day I woulda stretched you."
Perhaps, Wale will fully address his relationship with Meek whenever he drops his next album. Or, maybe he'll explain how he feels about MMG.
