J. Cole famously apologized to Kendrick Lamar for dissing him on the song "7 Minute Drill," but that's not the only time he took such action.
On an episode of the "Glue Guys" podcast, retired NBA player Shane Battier said Cole apologized to him when they saw each other at a restaurant in Miami. For some reason, the Dreamville rapper dissed him on "Rise & Shine," a song off his 2011 debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story. "We in two different games, you playing patty cake / Brother you’re lame, you’re Shane Battier," Cole spits in the song.
But the former Miami Heat player and Duke Blue Devil wasn't offended by the line, although he still thought it was big of Cole to apologize. "I caught a stray. I never met the guy," said Battier. "I figured he’s a Carolina fan and we used to beat Carolina on the reg. So, I’m like, he’s probably just mad. But you know what? I probably am lame. So I owned it, I didn’t care."
"So, I was having dinner in Miami this past summer and the maître d came up to me and was like, 'Hey, there’s this gentleman who wants to come speak to you and apologize to you. I think his name is J. Cole?' And I’m thinking, 'Who’s bulls-------g me? There's someone yanking my chain,'" he continued. "'Haha, very funny guys. I’m lame, I get it.'"
Battier said he then walked around the corner only to find Cole there and was taken aback at how tall he is. He also said the 6'3" rapper showed humility and explained why he dissed him.
“He was like, ‘Hey man, I was praying that we would have this moment where I could say, You know what, man, my bad. I was young. I’m sorry for you catching a stray at that moment. I’m like, 'Man, don’t worry about it. I get it. The rap game’s a tough game.' But I appreciated the humility of a guy who put me on blast. I wasn’t angry. I thought it was funny.”
And that was that.
