Drake finally heard back from Spotify after he took legal action against the company and Universal Music Group last month.
The OVO artist accused the label and streaming platform of using illegal methods to boost the popularity of Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us," a song where he accuses Drake of pedophilia. Spotify responded on Friday, December 20, in Manhattan court and called Drake's claims ludicrous.
"The predicate of petitioner’s entire request for discovery from Spotify is false," wrote a Spotify lawyer," according to Billboard. "Spotify and UMG have never had any such arrangement." The lawyer also called Drake's claims "speculative" as well as "far-fetched" and questioned why Spotify is even named in his filing since they have nothing to do with the Kendrick beef.
Spotify ripped Drake for filing a "pre-action" petition instead of an actual lawsuit as well. The way they see it, the "Family Matters" rapper only did that because he doesn't have enough evidence to file a full-on suit.
"What petitioner is seeking to do here … is to bypass the normal pleading requirements … and obtain by way of pre-action discovery that which it would only be entitled to seek were it to survive a motion to dismiss,” wrote the lawyer. "This subversion of the normal judicial process should be rejected."
At this point, there's a chance that Drake's filing won't reach the trial stage. But he's already been criticized in the court of public opinion. Snoop Dogg, for example, laughed at his legal move during an interview with hip-hop personality and podcast host, Bootleg Kev. "You know, on the West, we hold court in the streets," Snoop told him.
