It could be said that JAY-Z and Dame Dash had one of the most successful business relationships in hip-hop. Along with Kareem "Biggs" Burke, the trio started Roc-A-Fella Records in the '90s, which became one of the biggest labels of their day.
That was until 2004 when all three men went their separate ways. JAY turned into a billionaire businessman after that and continued to churn out hit records. Dame, meanwhile, suffered financial problems.
In fact, he admitted to being broke in August 2024, saying it's because he invested in his dreams. Dame has also been speaking badly of JAY in the last several years, so it's no surprise that he's still doing so amid the Brooklyn rapper being accused of rape.
A civil suit was filed against JAY earlier this month, and he's accused of raping a 13-year-old girl with Diddy in 2000. JAY has denied the claim repeatedly. Plus, his lawyer, as well as NBC News, pointed out inconsistencies in his accuser's story.
Dame recently spoke about JAY on The Art of Dialogue podcast and talked about the very moment he decided to walk away from him. It was during the time that JAY worked with R. Kelly, who's now in prison after being found guilty of multiple sex crimes. JAY and Kelly released a joint album in 2002 titled The Best of Both Worlds.
"The fact that Jay was f------g with him is what used to blow my mind more than anything," said Dame. "I don’t know why he wanted to f--k with this guy so much. Like, why? I’ve never understood it. Everybody knew R. Kelly married Aaliyah at 15. Everybody knew that. So was the conversation had like, 'Yo, how you gonna go and do something with this dude?' Hell yeah that conversation was had."
Dame said he specifically asked JAY why he would work with someone who raped his girlfriend. Dame and Aaliyah were involved romantically. It's been rumored that JAY liked her as well, which Dame also discussed in his interview.
"There’s a lot of other s--t but that alone was the nail in the coffin for me," said Dame about JAY working with Kelly. "I was outta there. I was gone. I knew that s--t was gonna blow up. I wanted no parts of that s--t. So I was done with him for that."
