A lot of rappers can be called rebels if one were to think about it, because many of them go against the cultural grain by delivering in-your-face raps about subjects often too taboo for the dinner table.
But New Orleans rapper Dee-1 rebels against the rebels. He's released songs criticizing Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Lil Wayne, told rappers their music creates violence, and said N.W.A should be stripped of their legendary status because they've influenced bad behavior among rap fans.
A lot of people have ripped Dee-1 for his criticism but not Beanie Sigel, because he recently gave him some encouragement. The two rappers saw each other on Saturday, October 26, at Killer Mike's "Vote Or Else" town hall in Atlanta, and Dee-1 posted their exchange.
In the clip, it seems that Beanie is complimenting Dee-1, but his words can't be heard. Dee-1 can be heard, though, and he tells the Philly rapper that he won't stop taking rappers to task.
"I’m coming from a pure place, brother. But I ain’t gonna back down for nobody. Promise I’m not. Not compromising. Thank you, brother. That means the world to me," Dee-1 says.
He also captioned the video and wrote, "That pound on your chest!! Followed by Man time. Don’t back down! Don’t compromise! Mannn!!! My convo with @beaniesigelsp got me so motivated and hype. i felt the love and respect. i got thru school and done cried real tears to the song at the end of this video. Look at Me Now. A SHIFT IS HAPPENING!!!"
This is the second famed rapper in a little over a month who acknowledged Dee-1, which doesn't happen everyday since he still teeters between the mainstream and underground. In September Kendrick Lamar released a song titled "Watch the Party Die," and said he wants to be "empathetic like Dee-1" in one of the verses.
"i appreciate the shoutout brother. More than you’ll ever know. A shift is happening. The time is now!" Dee-1 tweeted in response.
