If you've been tuned in to hip-hop news and releases in 2024, you're likely already familiar with Doechii, the TDE signee responsible for the electrifying mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal.
Even with headline-grabbing events like the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef, Doechii has served as one of the most popular acts of the year, delivering numerous viral performances on platforms such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, NPR's Tiny Desk, and Genius' Open Mic series, alongside Issa Rae.
Now, according to the Tampa native's official Instagram page, Doechii is aiming to take over 2025 as well, with the release of the Denial Is A River show. The project, which appears to spoof classic sitcoms of the 1990s, was initially teased via Instagram with a caption that simply reads "Denial Is A River Show Premiering January 2nd 2025."
In the attached video, Doechii is joined by the likes of Zack Fox, ScHoolboy Q, Teezo Touchdown, Baby Tate, and Earl Sweatshirt, who is humorously billed under the pseudonym Brad Pitt.
At this time, it's unclear what exactly the Denial Is A River show will be. The announcement post clearly frames the project as a sitcom, and even employs the theme tune from ABC's Family Matters.
DJ Miss Milan, who serves as a close collaborator of Doechii and a Grammy nominated producer on Alligator Bites Never Heal, explicitly referred to the project as such, writing “Get your popcorn ready there’s a new sitcom in the house and it’s brought to you by real life! Lmaooo!!"
The acclaimed producer is also credited in the promotional video, leaving some fans to ask if she's gunning for an Emmy nom alongside her Grammy buzz.
Realistically, though, it's difficult to imagine this massive ensemble of hip-hop royalty assembling for a full-length series. Some fans believe that the Denial Is A River show is simply a short film or music video, since it shares a title with one of Doechii's most popular new singles. Still, the stacked cast of rappers, producers, and entertainers involved in the announcement video seems to be teasing something bigger.
Perhaps the Denial Is A River show will be a series of live performances from each of the guest stars, in a similar vein to the Tiny Desk or Red Bull Spiral Freestyle series. Either way, we won't have to wait long to find out, as Doechii promises the Denial Is A River show will premiere on January 2.
