When a rapper's core fanbase are the only ones defending him or her, and everyone else is trashing that person, it's never good. But that's exactly what's happening to Drake, because after filing a legal petition against Universal Music Group and Spotify, the OVO rapper has been getting battered on and offline.
Even a CNN anchor dissed Drake when reporting on the legal filings. "This may be the hip-hop equivalent of asking to speak with a manager," said the anchor.
Drake is accusing Universal and Spotify of illegally boosting streaming numbers and radio play for Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us," a song where he accuses Drake of pedophilia. The Canadian rhymer also threatened to sue Universal for defamation because of the song.
The thing is, even though not everyone abides by it, hip-hop has a no snitching code, which is taken from the general street code. So, if a hip-hopper tells on another hip-hopper, that person will usually receive a lot of backlash.
Other people who've let Drake have it are Charlamagne tha God and Joe Budden. In short, Joe said Drake's legal filings follow a consistent pattern of some questionable behavior, while Charlamagne gave him "Donkey of the Day."
For those who don't know, the radio host gives the "Donkey of the Day" title to people who he believes committed a huge wrongdoing. Plus, Charlamagne called Drake a hypocrite because he started a rumor about Kendrick and his longtime partner Whitney Alford during his battle with the GNX rapper.
"The person who has the real defamation case in this situation is Kendrick’s woman ," said Charlamagne on Monday, December 2. "Because Drake not only said Kendrick was beating on her, he said that Dave Free, Kendrick’s business partner and friend, was the real father to one of Kendrick’s kids."
