J. Cole has been sharing some wonderful stories and behind-the-scenes information on his newly released audio series Inevitable. One of his latest stories has to do with his 2013 song "Let Nas Down."
Cole made the song after he heard that Nas, one of his favorite rappers, didn't like his 2011 single "Work Out." "Let Nas Down" goes into detail about Cole's belief that he disappointed the rap legend.
On Inevitable, Cole said he first played "Let Nas Down" to his manager Ibraham "Ib" Hamad while they were at a Houston airport. Then out of nowhere, Nas appeared. "He gives me the headphones back, and all of a sudden this n---a Ib is like, 'No way,'" Cole explained, per HipHopDX. "I said, 'What?' He’s like, 'Yo, this n---a Nas is right there.' He was boarding the flight ... I was like, 'Get the f--k out of here.'"
"Right in that moment, I was like, 'This is some divine s--t. This is ridiculous, bro,'" Cole continued. "I don’t believe in coincidences. I was like, 'This is a sign from God like, Keep on your path, stick with it.' Mind you, I’ve never met Nas before."
Then Cole discovered that Nas was sitting right behind him during their flight, so he wasted no time in playing him "Let Nas Down."
“I got on the plane and I was like, 'I have to play him this song. I’m supposed to play him this song,'" Cole recalled. "I say what’s up to him and I’m like, 'Bro, I know this is gonna sound f-----g insane. I just made this song f-----g two days ago. I can’t even explain to you how crazy it is that I’m seeing you right now randomly on this flight. But I have to play you this song.'"
So, Cole played him the cut but can't remember his reaction. However, Nas must've liked it, because he later tweeted that Cole didn't let him down with "Work Out." The pair also collaborated on a remix to "Let Nas Down" titled "Made Nas Proud."
