JAY-Z is known for taking on other rappers like Nas, Jim Jones, and Cam'ron, but he usually doesn't duke it out publicly with lawyers. He's doing so now, however, with attorney Tony Buzbee.
The 4:44 rapper is suing Buzbee for extortion, which has to do with him accusing JAY of raping a 13-year-old girl with Diddy in 2000 after the MTV Video Music Awards.
"Viewed in the context of Buzbee’s prior statements threatening to file criminal complaints against, and publicly shame, a 'long list' of celebrities, the message in the extortion demands was clear: pay up, or face a criminal investigation and extraordinary reputational harm," wrote JAY's legal team when they filed the extortion suit.
Per Rolling Stone, JAY has since added to the extortion claim by tacking on defamation, and his legal team laid out their charge against Buzbee in detail.
"In short, defendants placed a gun to Mr. Carter’s head," it says in the rapper's legal filing, which uses his real name, Shawn Carter. "They were demanding that Mr. Carter either: (a) pay 'something of substance' to stop Defendants from making public the wildly false allegations of sexual assault that would subject Mr. Carter to opprobrium and irreparably harm his reputation, family, career and livelihood, or (2) endure that financial and personal ruin. Defendants’ statements and correspondence made clear the immediate and extensive threat of exposure if Mr. Carter failed to pay."
Buzbee has since responded and called the lawsuit "frivolous," while claiming it'll be dismissed. He also says JAY and his legal team are trying to intimidate him, and he'll continue to stand his ground. By the way it looks, it'll take a long while before all of this is sorted out in court.
