JAY-Z, real name Shawn Carter, continues to defend himself against a claim that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in 2000 with Diddy after the MTV Video Music Awards. He's been going back and forth with lawyer Tony Buzbee in recent weeks, who filed the civil suit ā first suing him for extortion, then defamation.
The Brooklyn rapper now wants his accuser to be identified, and he's pointing to a recent NBC interview as the reason. His rationale is this: The woman, known only as Jane Doe, proved that she isn't concerned about her privacy, because she spoke about the case on national television.
"By choosing to participate in a public NBC News interview, [Jane Doe] has deliberately placed herself in the public eye, undermining any claim that anonymity is necessary to protect her well-being," said JAY-Zās lawyer, Alex Spiro, according to AllHipHop. "This imbalance unfairly harms Mr. Carter by allowing unverified accusations to damage his reputation while shielding the accuser from similar scrutiny."
JAY-Z's accuser spoke with NBC News earlier this month about the alleged assault. The outlet then pointed out inconsistencies in her story since some of the details were different from what was alleged in court documents.
Spiro also spoke of inconsistencies at a press conference several days ago, and showed through photos that JAY-Z was at a different VMA event than the woman claimed.
Spiro questioned her claim that a female celebrity was present during the alleged assault as well, saying it's unlikely that person would sit there, watch the whole thing and not intervene. Plus, the rapper's attorney asked why that female celebrity isn't being named.
"Her statements in the NBC interview directly conflict with key elements of her lawsuit, highlighting the lack of corroboration and credibility in her claims," said Spiro when requesting to have the accuser identified. "Given her voluntary participation in a high-profile media interview, there is no reasonable justification for continued anonymity."
JAY-Z has maintained his innocence from the beginning and is said to be highly upset about the suit because he had to explain it to his children.
