This year’s Super Bowl was held in New Orleans. After the venue announcement was made, Lil Wayne was deemed to be the obvious choice. The assumption made a lot of sense. After all, who better than Weezy to rock the crowd in his hometown? However, the artist announcement crushed a lot of hearts.

Coming off a popular rap beef against Drake, Kendrick Lamar was handed the Super Bowl Halftime Show gig. Many people had an issue the with his selection. Other than the fact that Lamar is one of the biggest rappers in the world, there was no other major reason why he should headline the show in New Orleans.

At the time, Wayne blamed himself for keeping his hopes high for the opportunity. The rap legend took to Instagram Live to say that he felt “hurt.” Wayne said, “I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position. I thought there was nothing better than that spot, that stage, that platform, in my city. So, it hurt, it hurt a whole lot.”

As time went by, Wayne moved on from the snub. Then, the Super Bowl happened. Lamar took the stage and garnered mixed reactions from fans worldwide. In his recent interview with Rolling Stone, Wayne talked about the Super Bowl gig that should’ve been his. He revealed that he didn’t even watch Lamar’s set and went out for a smoke and played pool.

He said, “Every time I looked, it was nothing that made me want to go inside and see what was going on.”

If Wayne performed, it could’ve been an iconic moment, not only for Wayne, but for hip-hop as well. Just imagine, one of the all-time greats bringing the house down as the first solo rapper to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show in his hometown. That was the perfect recipe.

Now, Wayne wouldn’t ever consider another Super Bowl opportunity. He said, “They stole that feeling. I don’t want to do it. It was perfect.”

It was indeed a perfect scenario. However, several internal and external forces prohibited the rap legend from having a moment of a lifetime at this stage of his career.
