Uwmami hooks up with Sélu on ‘Satin’

Alluring and hypnotic, on “Satin,” Uwmami struts her facility for blending sleek sounds with the chill and pressure of fluctuation.

Vaguely reminiscent of Houston “slab” – slow, low, and bangin’ – Irish producer Uwmami’s latest track, “Satin,” hijacks the slow and low aspects of Houston’s musical claim to fame, and then infuses it with nuanced sonic touches of industrial-phase hip-hop.

Featuring the swanky balm of Sélu’s cashmere falsetto, rolling out his ‘60s retro-flavored flow on textures conjuring up memories of The Lion King, “Satin” reveals the sheer muscle of stripped-down production combined with carefully arranged harmonic avenues made up of ripples, oscillations, and fractal shimmers.

In conversation with Hot Press’ Lucy O’Toole, Uwmami recently explained how she fashions her unique phasing sound, which was influenced by Thin Lizzy:

“Most directly in the effects and tones I’m drawn to. I use a lot of chorus, phaser, and flanger effects on guitars, keys, synth, and even drums sometimes. Those layers can add so much warmth and depth, and I think Thin Lizzy really utilized that well, in bringing a softness into even those really big, high-energy songs. Their music has a real honesty and spaciousness that I hope I’ve taken on board.”

Based in Dublin, Ireland, Uwmami’s previous releases include her EP, Summer Syrup, followed by another EP, N.U.N.D., and 2019’s mixtape, Uwmami Presents: Summer Series, featuring a series of collaborations with artists like Awesimon, Eiffe, Omo Aston, and a host of other rising Irish hip-hop vocalists.

“Satin” opens on a measured tip-tapping rhythm generated by drums and a fat bassline, topped by vibrating guitar and horizontal droning synth. A sporadic mid-level accent imbues the tune with remote hues, adding depth and dimension, while Sélu’s deluxe timbres deliver lyrics gliding on silky smooth sonic surfaces.
