Oakland rapper Young Gully has been consistently putting out music for a while to very little national fanfare like only a Bay Area rapper can. He’s been featured on a song with local rappers Blast Holiday and Philthy Rich as well as collaborating with San Francisco’s Roach Gigz for his mixtape memorializing slain police brutality victim Oscar Grant. Gully even has his own Tonite Show album with Oakland producer DJ Fresh, something of a rite of passage for young Bay rappers. Last year he released the fifth installment in his Hustla Movement mixtape series, and today he dropped a video for the song “Liar.”
The soulful loop provided by Levi of the First Class Passengers production team and Gully’s perceived perpetual pressure to lie make this less a song toward haters, and more existential. The video features beautiful, sweeping shots of San Fran and the Bay Bridge as well as scenes from the “Occupy” movement and a naked woman covered in glitter. The deluxe edition of Hustla Movement 5 will hit iTunes on April 8.
