Rome Fortune is an Atlanta rapper who still somehow feels out of left field, even as Future and Young Thug show up on the radio. Most of it is in the clouded, avant melodies of his beats. He’s got a pretty nimble flow to either keep up with or run circles around the most outlandish or familiar trap beats. His debut mixtape featured production from Childish Major, Dun Deal, DJ Spinz and others. The sequel, Beautiful Pimp II, released earlier this year, was wholly produced by Jersey City producer Cito on the Beat.
Rome Fortune seems to have liked a uniform producer with nonuniform beats, as his upcoming EP The Drives, Thighs & Lies, due out April 30, will feature all production by Dun Deal. The producer will be spending 2014 competing with fellow Atlantans Metro Boomin and the 808 Mafia crew for the runner-up to Producer of the Year behind DJ Mustard, after making “Hannah Montana” and “Stoner” hits last year.
“Damn Good, Damn Different” has a bumping, pulsating beat like a dead man’s heart beating in the trunk of an Oldsmobile with subwoofers. Rome sounds particularly energized, ready to take on all comers and come on all takers. His flow speeds and slows with his whims, as he protests to being put in a box. Listen below.
