80’s babies rejoice for the revival of Baby Phat

Prepare for fashion industry disruption.  Kimora Lee Simmons is poised to bring the revival of Baby Phat.

80’s babies around the world rejoiced on International Women’s Day (Mar. 8) when Kimora Lee Simmons revealed that she had re-purchased the company that became the most profitable business expansion under her ex-husband’s label Phat Fashions.

Russell Simmons, a legend and mogul in his own right as co-founder of Def Jam Records, expanded on the Phat Farm imprint in 1999 with the apparel company that became the go-to for Y2K fashion – Baby Phat.

Kimora served in the capacity of creative director and this was undoubtedly, for lack of a better word, her baby even after it’s sale to Kellwood in 2004.  Earning over $1 billion in sales, the 43 year-old former model turned entrepreneur and designer got her start on runways at the age of 13 with the help of Karl Lagerfeld and luxury fashion house Chanel.

Between the years of 1999 and 2010, it was hard to go anywhere without seeing a female adorning a piece of Baby Phat known by its signature sleek cat logo.  They dominated the fashion scene since its initial launch and their runway shows were a who’s who affair for those in the entertainment industry.

If the news has you anxiously thumbing through the backs of your closets for some throw back Baby Phat – maybe a matching trackie or pair of gold hoops but can’t find a single garment or accessory, worry not.  The line will launch this summer.
